Preservation As with any sports collector, that person has a strong devotion to their hobby where they not only invest a significant portion of their paycheck but spend an immeasurable amount of their leisure time in search of specific sports memorabilia. It is with no question to me that the most overlooked aspect to collecting is the importance of properly displaying and preserving your treasured sports collectibles especially those containing autographs. I cannot say that it is just plain neglect to why those expose their valuables to ruins but rather the culprit of unawareness of the reality and the effect that improper storage and display techniques will have your sports memorabilia collection. ULTRA VIOLET RADIATION AND LIGHTING It appears that most sports collectors have at least heard of the term 'Ultraviolet Radiation'. Most realize that the source to this radiation is the sun. While it is true that sunlight is the ultimate source of energy and is vitally important to life as we know it. However, absorption of incident solar energy by components is a natural cancer to sports collectibles of all kinds. That's just half of the story. FLUORESCENT BULBS Although fluorescent lighting is dangerous in terms of illumination of your autograph sports collection but keep in mind, nothing is as worse as natural lighting other than direct sunlight. We speak from experience in this area as a few years ago we exhibited at an outdoor event and actually witnessed a beautifully autographed photograph become an unsigned photograph in a matter of 12 hours with exposure in direct sunlight! You have just learned that natural lighting sources and fluorescent lighting are certain destructive displaying techniques. So now what? Your typical household incandescent lighting is of no threat of UVR so start screwing in those 100 watt bulbs. Furthermore, we cannot over stress the importance of consulting with a professional framing company who are specifically trained in archival display solutions. FRAMING Another key component is the glass on the frame. Glass itself does not deflect Ultraviolet Radiation (UDR) but Plexiglas will deter much of the UDR. Another highly important note to keep in mind is that under NO circumstances should the piece of sports memorabilia, especially photographs come in direct content with the glass! Keep this equation in mind. GLASS + HUMIDITY + PHOTOGRAPH = GARBAGE CAN. Although museum matting and framing are considerably more expensive, consider the price versus cost by asking yourself this question. What is the price of this museum quality framing and what will the COST be over time if I do not? HUMIDITY To deter mold growth, maintain your sports memorabilia storage and display area at room temperature (68 degrees) with a relative humidity in the 50% range. If humidity control is a problem, invest in a dehumidifier if your furnace isn't already equipped with one. PLASTIC SHEETS - SPORTS MEMORABILIA I have yet to see an autograph or sports memorabilia collection that does not have a three ring binder filled with those 8.5 x 11" plastic sheets to store autographed photographs and related sports memorabilia in. Although it seems to have subsided over the past few years, but there was a time that I was able to identify a plastic sheet eating away at an autographed photograph. Many of these sheets are NOT archival safe as they contain another chemical called PVC which is a chemical softening agent. This toxic chemical will most certain "lift" the autograph off the photograph and transfer it onto the plastic sheet! Every once in awhile, I'll walk a convention and spot one of these sheets inside a binder that has already caused the irreversible damage of removing the autograph. Sections of the photograph inside have a 'wet' appearance to them which is actually the plastic sheet that has attached itself to the photograph. If you carefully place your hand inside the sheet and slowly lift, you will separate the sheet from the photograph, along with parts or all of the autograph. I cannot describe the stunned look on the vendors face when I explain to them what that innocent plastic sheet has just done to their product and then show them for myself. In fact, I actually have a small collection of these sheets that contain the lifted autograph inside the sheet. My collection consists of 'autographed PVC sheets' on baseball great, Buck Leonard, NASCAR driver, Bill Elliott a partial signature of Ted Williams and a few others. However, at the time of this writing, I am unable to locate them but when I do I'll be sure to post them on this page. When purchasing plastic binder sheets, look for the SAFE or PVC FREE logo and if you can "smell the plastic" steer clear!
