receiving  several offers, including a $95 Million contract from the Seattle Mariners, Alex Rodriguez finally signed with the Texas Rangers. Shocking everyone from fans to team owners, In December 2000, Alex Rodriguez signed the now legendary $252 Million Dollar contract, becoming the highest-paid player in sports history. (Alex's contract is more than half of the previous highest contract in history) Alex was booed most of the 2001at nearly every ballpark he visited.  Names such as "Pay-Rod", "A-Fraud", "A-Wad" and "Sell-out" "Alex The In-Great" and my personal favorite, "K-Rod" were common place.

For 3 seasons, Carlos Guillen played back-up shortstop for the Mariners. He watched Alex Rodriguez closely, learning from him every day. Alex Rodriguez and Carlos formed a tight friendship, and after A-Rod signed on with the Rangers, Carlos became his full time replacement for the Seattle Mariners.
